Santa Cruz 2000

TRIP REPORT
Seattle team
The seattle team in Santa Cruz - click to enlarge

Unfortunately we were unable to bring home the victory cup from Santa Cruz, although a great weekend was had by all. In our first game of the weekend which was a must win if we were to make it to the finals we took on the much improved Denver Bulldogs in a full length 80 minute encounter. After a somewhat slow start we led at half time by a mere goal when coach Burridge made a few changes in the center which had immediate effect. After a physical game and a couple of blood noses we ended up pulling away to win by 6 goals.

Seattle 10.4 - 64
Denver 4.4 - 28

In our second game, we played a combined team of Orange County and Los Angeles. We decided to rest a few of our players for the final the next day, with all of our new players getting a run and contributing to the win. Obviously the highlight of the game was my awesome hip and shoulder resulting in a concussion for one of our opponents - well ok, the guy ran at me flat out and somehow bounced off the wrong way, leaving me bemused at how he wasn't moving on the ground and I was still standing.

Seattle 5.11 - 41
OC/LA 4.2 - 26

The Saturday Night Social was enjoyed by the whole team showing the spirit of Aussie Rules in the USA at a local brewpub along with all of the other teams.

So the final on the Sunday was a repeat of last year's Anzac Cup - Seattle vs Santa Cruz.

After kicking the first goal of the game things were looking good for us. The strength of Santa Cruz in moving the ball out of the center and into the hands of their forwards then took over. We continued to battle hard at the ball throughout the game with all players putting in 120% but Santa Cruz were just too good for us.

Seattle 2.4 - 16
Santa Cruz 9.3 - 57

There were some stand-out performances over the weekend, our very own Lance Van Loon won tournament MVP, with Ben Harling from Denver and Sean D'Arcy from Santa Cruz as runners-up. Big Waz from Santa Cruz dominated the tournament with eighteen goals.

As was the case last year, Santa Cruz put on a great tournament. We hope to return the favour later this year before the Nationals in October.
