SEATTLE FOOTY NEWS - Thursday May 22nd, 2003

METRO FOOTY KICKS OFF
This Thursday May 22nd the first round of MetroFooty kicks off in Seattle. The 9-a-side format will take place at Whitman Middle School at 7:30pm followed by drinks at the Kangaroo and Kiwi afterwards.

VANCOUVER TRIP - Players please RSVP
The BCFooty Cup is next weekend - May 31/June 1. I have a block of rooms booked at the Burnaby Radisson (where we stayed last time) for USD$75/night (includes 15% tax) - each room can accommodate up to 4 people (2 double beds). Could all players please RSVP with their intention to attend as well as how many other players they wish to share a room with. I need to give a final room list to the hotel asap. Spouses etc are more than welcome. The Burnaby Radisson is close to the ground and is where the Calgary team will be staying also - it’s a relatively short cab ride to the downtown area.

DENVER TRIP - Players please RSVP
As many of the players already know we have to play more games against USAFL clubs. We are currently planning a trip to Denver for their tournament on the weekend of July 19. Denver will then return the favour and play us in Seattle (more than likely Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver) on August 16. Airfares should be around the $250 mark with hotel rooms at $30/night per player twin share or $20/night per player quad share. The club hopes to cover the cost of rental vans.
I need all interested players to RSVP now so I can begin to book the airfares!!! Our footy trips away are always a good laugh and the Denver boys are a pretty decent bunch.

NEWS ARTICLE FROM UW
Congrats to Hayden, Ryan and Rudy for getting an article in "The Daily" newspaper at University of Washington regarding our new Husky Aussie Rules club. You can read the article here

MACQUARIE SPONSORSHIP & LEON WALKER FAREWELL
Leon Walker from MacQuarie has secured us some sponsorship dollars to go ahead and purchase some new footy jumpers for our newly formed MetroFooty League. As well as purchasing some additional Richmond jumpers we will have two new sets of jumpers - one in the University of Washington Husky colours (Purple, White and Gold) and the other in St Kilda colours.
Leon leaves the country this Sunday and is heading back to Australia after landing a promotion in Sydney - his thumping left foot kicks will be sorely missed so come say goodbye to him at the pub (K&K) tonight after the MetroFooty games.

AMERICANS - WANT TO PLAY AUSSIE RULES FOR YOUR COUNTRY?
EAST VS WEST GAME - JUNE 21 (same day as our game against Vancouver)
The East vs. West All Star weekend is a 50/50 concept where the best Australians in the land will line up with their American counterparts to represent their geographical zone in an All Star format. All teams west of and including Dallas will represent the West. All teams east of and including Kansas City will be considered East. There will be two East vs. West games and the CAFL Grand Final, all played on Saturday, June 21. Prospective Revolution players that play in the CAFL Grand Final will not be expected to double up in games (as the Revolution selection committee will be watching them play in the CAFL Grand Final anyway). This weekend is the only official opportunity for prospective Revolution players to display their wares in front of the full Revolution selection committee.
The coaching course will run over the weekend with a three hour session on Friday night (start 7pm), three hours on Saturday morning and a final four hour session on Sunday morning, finishing at 12pm.

Match Report Game 2 –May 10th 2003

Once again the Cougars provided a magnificent venue for football, this time just over the border in Langley B.C. Seattle players abandoned the strategy of arriving fashionably late and assembled in plenty of time for the big game. During the warm-ups the big crowd could tell that Seattle was “switched-on” and was well prepared to extract revenge on Vancouver for the big loss in Game 1, although numbers were a bit of a concern. Seattle had seventeen at game time while Vancouver had about three hundred on the bench….

First Quarter: Seattle bolted out of the gates and had three quick goals on the board in a matter of minutes. The ball was being cleared extremely quickly out of the center, and on the occasions when Vancouver moved forward, new Seattle players Scott and Ryan Singletary were rebounding well off the half-back line. Derek Hagman was competing well against the dangerous Shine Edgar, Shevy continued on his merry way from the previous game, and in the forward line Mick and Darren were marking while Colin, Brad and Rudy were keeping the ball locked in. Seattle was playing well together, running in numbers, attacking the ball and disposing of it accurately and although Vancouver was caught off guard, we knew they would bounce back…..

Score: Seattle 4 goals, Vancouver 1

Second Quarter: From the opening bounce, we displayed the same qualities that gave us the lead in the first quarter, with Bill and Marc Webster competing well in the ruck, Bosey vacuuming up everything at ground level (then sneezing on it due his hay fever), Ben Weber prominent and when “Mr. Grand Entrance”, Steve Grimmett, showed up he had an immediate impact on the ground. The game was becoming a struggle between the two back lines, with Greg Morton, Pedro Lindsay and Henry Winkler rebounding the ball to an increasingly dominant Shevy. Brad, Mick and the boys up forward were making the most of limited opportunities and at the half Seattle still had hold of the three-goal lead. Injury had cut our numbers down to the bare minimum; it would have to be a big effort in the second half to win the game. The 60-degree weather was also taking a toll – (if I said this in Australia I would be ridiculed even more than I am now)!

Score Seattle 5 Goals. Vancouver 2

Third Quarter: Seattle again attacked the ball, ran in numbers and worked together, but superior Vancouver numbers were starting to be a major factor in the game. The whole quarter was a dogfight, Vancouver pulling within 8 points before a steadying goal from Mr. Shevlin gave us some breathing room. Still we were confident we could win; you could tell at the break that there was no way we were going to let this one slip. The effort as a team was there with everyone playing a part, newer players especially were doing all the little things that win games.

Score Seattle 6 Goals Vancouver 4 (I think)

Last Quarter: Just a battle until the end—Seattle held on for their best victory ever in my opinion due to their relative inexperience and minimum of players.

FINAL SCORE: Vancouver 4-12: 36 to Seattle 6-7: 43 in a memorable game.

The best part about the game was the way in which every player contributed to the effort, played disciplined, tough football, and worked as a team for four quarters. Thanks to Dave Jolly who played a big part in our success by organizing the player moves on the boundary, George Jodry who ran water all day and Annalise (hope I spelled that right), Campo and Dave for a good umpiring display. Kudos to Hayden Reeve who played the game, got battered around then fronted up for his bachelor party the same night, where he got beat up even more….

After the game and a kick with the Vancouver junior kids we headed to Colin’s house for a wheelbarrow full of VB and discovered that Col is probably the only Llama-owning Aussies Rules player in the world. Interestingly, Col used to own two of them (thought those pies tasted a little odd)…The Canadian authorities have also issued a “ limerick” alert” based on the pathetic efforts of Grimmett’s kids who caused several people to run from the party screaming. Stay away from him….

Best Players: Great team effort, although Shevlin, Morton, Weber, Hagman, and Hogben, Mick, Steve G and Brad were great throughout.

Goals: No idea.

Next Up: BC Footy Cup in Burnaby. Will need every player to be available as we have three games over the weekend. Thanks to all who came up to Langley, it was a great day.

This Saturdays game will be held at Brown Park in Langley, just across the Canadian border. The ground is located at 240th Street and 51st Avenue in Langley - you can download directions from the Vancouver teams website here. According to the directions it is recommended that you take the Lynden border crossing (the turnoff is before the Truck Crossing).

Game 1 - April 26th 2003
Loyal Heights playfield was the place to be on the 26th April as Seattle and Vancouver gathered for the first match of the 2003 season.
The day of the game, much like our fortunes on the field, dawned dark and gloomy but with the passage of time, bright and sunny patches were to be found if you looked hard enough…….

A monster contingent of Seattle Grizzlies arrived (eventually) at the ground prepared to pick up where last season left off, by losing a heart-breaker. Contrary to popular beliefs about the culture of winning, this was a good thing for our club and especially the new players and converts to the game, and not entirely because of that whole Nietsche "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger" bull, but because it will fill our side with the sort of hunger for retribution needed for our away games in the frozen northern wastes of BC.
But back to the report of the actual match...
In our first real hit out for the year, and blooding (literally in some cases) eight new players, Seattle as started slowly due to the early game start time of 3 p.m, but the endeavor was good. We were winning a fair share of the ball but some of our skills were a little rusty-there was a reliance on individual efforts rather than teamwork to move the ball. Shevy continued on his merry way from last year, & Mick, Steve Grimmett and Derek "Larry" Hagman were providing good rebounding from the half back line. Poor kicking in the first quarter both into the forward line and at goal proved costly. Vancouver held a slight advantage after 20 minutes, having held a huge advantage, four coconuts, three watermelons and a full house only minutes earlier No matter what you say about Coach Donlen, he sure knows how to raid the pantry and bluff at poker - if only he knew how to coach he'd be an all round asset to this club.
In the second quarter, Vancouver started to pull away, leaving Seattle feeling strangely dissatisfied and frustrated. They were using the ball a bit better, and at times it seemed like there were 26 Cougars players on the field (and given Vancouver coach Stuart Grills career as an accountant at Enron, this may well have been correct). Again we had as much of the ball, and at times moved the ball very well but we kicked indirectly and poorly for goal, not getting the results we needed. Ryan, our new UW recruit, was starring on the wing, while Chuck was showing us he is not just the best dressed man in all of football by attacking the ball like it was 50% off day at Value Village. Highlight of the quarter: Darren Hogben took a spectacular mark, kicking an equally spectacular point.
In the second half, Seattle drastically changed their side around and with one of the less mobile players (i.e. myself) taking a rest we started to move the ball even better. Brad the publican was active around the ground, Pedro Lindsay, after finding his boots, was playing well and Greg "Geelong can still win the flag" Morton was rebounding the ball well from half back. Still, we did not put the score on the board even though we had more than our share of the ball. Vancouver ran out winners by about 8 goals.
Our after match function at the K & K was enjoyed by all, the highlight being the performance by Shine Edgar on the didgeridoo. Thanks again Shine.

Apologies:
Sadly though I must confess that the day was rife with errors, all by me and based on my substandard mathematical skills. For example when I said to our players to arrive at 2:15, I did neglect to mention that I based my calculations on Pacific Time, not the Hawaiian Islands Time Zone that we normally use. I also forgot to allow extra time for players driving into that strong I-5 headwind, which meant that most players were late. Shouldn't happen again.
Also, when outlining the rule regarding 50% non-Australian participation, I forgot to include in those calculations the Canadian-U.S. exchange rate, tax and border waiting time, which greatly inflated the amount of Australian players that were eligible to be on the field for Vancouver at one time. My counterpart, wearing the helmet that has given him such great renown as a crash test dummy, to his credit quickly discovered my calculation errors and proceeded to correct them. Let's hope I don't make the same mistake next time.

Umpiring: Thanks to Campo, Matt Muller and Dave for the field, and incidentally doing a very good job, George Jodry for goal umpiring and all the guys who ran the boundary. (If I have forgotten anyone I apologize). Campo may have found his calling in life (at least one that doesn't call for an imaginary canoe)…

Summary: Overall, a good performance by Seattle in our first real hit out of the season. Given that we started eight new players, there were some very good passages of teamwork. Everyone who turned up got a run and the newer players got a good taste of how Australian football is played. The challenge now is to build on this and continue to work on the little things that win games: talking, teamwork as well as practicing skill deficiencies, kicking for goal being obvious.

Best Players: Ryan Singletary, Justin Shevlin, Glenn Gardner, Greg Morton, and Derek Hagman.

Next Game: April 10th Langley BC. All Welcome
